At ISSADESIGN, well-being is an important subject for us. Since 2013, the international Well Building Institute has been awarding the ‘WELL certification’. The purpose of this certification, now available to Quebec businesses, is to increase and maintain the well-being of the occupants of a building. For a building or project to get a WELL certification, the establishment must first pass an assessment based on the following 7 major themes:
First of all, the way in which the environment is organized influences the diet of the occupants of an establishment. In fact, WELL suggests that good environment design shapes the eating habits of the occupants of a facility in a positive way. Cafeteria spaces are a good way to understand the connection between design and healthy eating.
For an establishment to receive the WELL certification, it must be designed to value and supply healthy food. The design of a cafeteria must increase visibility to healty food by making it accessible and appealing. In addition to inviting people to improve their consumption of fruits and vegetables, design can also allow people to make informed choices themselves. This option facilitates comparisons of food by promoting simple and effective labels.
Next, the building must be close to healthy food distribution centers. As a result, WELL encourages close proximity to specialty grocery stores, access to farmers markets, etc. As for the exterior of the building, there is evidence that gardening increases better eating habits and gives gardeners a positive impression of global health. For example, the courtyard can become a garden that invites the customers, users, to participate collectively in the growing of their own fruits and vegetables. At ISSADESIGN we believe that, in addition to positively increasing people's perception of health, gardening increases the sense of belonging and of community between colleagues and with the company and decreases waste by prioritizing composting.
In conclusion, the integration of the diet aspect to the WELL certification allows people to have a positive perception not only on healthy nutrition, but on overall health. At ISSADESIGN, we use our creativity so that well-being becomes a subject that is important to our customers as much as it is to us. It's up to us, as designers, to have the creativity and the necessary knowledge of the environment and the human beings, to create better human spaces.
